In responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:
Playing games as a pastime and outlet is allowed if one does not become addicted to it. The games must not have any negative influences on the gamer. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with game development provided that the games does not encourage, glorify violence, or impart unethical values.
It is permissible to use drawings and characters in games as long as they are intended for communication purposes. Also, the drawings and characters should be free of taints of shirk or association of partners with Allah.
Almighty Allah knows best.
