Past Abuse: I Am Scared of Getting Married

15 August, 2024
Q I don’t want to get married. Even though I have found a very gentle man as my fiancé but suddenly I want to distance myself from him. I want to run away from this place and everybody whom I know. I don’t want to be with someone. P.S. I was in abusive relationship before my engagement. I don’t know what to do now...

Answer

The trauma of abuse might have a huge impact on you and on your future relationships. Being scared of your future partner is a natural response to what you have gone through.

If you enter into marriage without healing, the negative experiences of the past could still haunt you and destroy your loving relationship.

Counseling and group therapy are really worth trying, as they can assist you in moving forward.

Also, there are support groups. Join one and share your experience with others who have gone through the same struggle. You learn from each other and heal together.
