In response to the growing number of migrants, members of the Muslim community in El Paso, Texas, are coming together to help new comers and assist non-profit working to accommodate them.

“We are a small population in El Paso but definitely one that wants to give back and contribute,” said Raneem Karboji, CBC 4 Local reported.

The past weeks have seen record numbers of migrant teenagers and children crossing into the United States without their parents, at a rate that far exceeds the government’s ability to care for them.

The number of unaccompanied children encountered by Border Patrol increased sharply earlier this year, from 5,858 in January to 9,457 in February — a 61% increase, according to federal data.

It is the largest one month percentage increase since US Customs and Border Protection began reporting the data in 2010.

Non-profit groups have been racing to add shelter capacity for these minors. Members of El Paso’s Muslim community have joined these efforts to offer help.

The group said they were able to donate 100 meals and hygiene packs to migrants being sheltered at Annunciation house and raise over $1,800 for the nonprofit.

“We want to welcome them, make them feel a little less alone in what they’re going through until they reunite with some family or a sponsor,” said Karboji.

Muslims have been campaigning to support migrants and their families over the past years.

In 2019, American Muslims kicked off a new campaign to bail out detained migrant parents, helping to reunite their families as soon as possible.
