Q In the world we live in today, especially for those living in the West, opposite gender interactions take place on a daily basis. To what extent is opposite gender relations allowed?

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

  1. Socializing with the opposite gender all depends on your character and the way you act, keeping in mind the characteristics of a good Muslim.
  2. It is permitted to be decent and dignified with the opposite gender. What is impermissible is to obviously go into vulgarities or to go into a situation or a scenario that will lead to a sin.

Yasir Qadhi was born in Houston, Texas and completed his primary and secondary education in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
