Blackburn’s Muslim billionaire Issa brothers, the new owners of Asda giant supermarket, have made a generous donation of £100,000 to food redistribution charity FareShare to support Muslim charities and community groups across the UK during Ramadan.
Asda will give access to vulnerable families to get food through the 11,000 charities and community groups FareShare supports.
“Through our work with FareShare, we’re supporting vulnerable families and providing meals to those most in need,” said Jo Warner, Asda’s senior director of community, Eastern Eye reported.
“Food is to be shared and enjoyed and is often a central part of bringing communities together, especially during important religious festivals such as Ramadan.
“I know many are hoping for a small family gathering to share pre-fasting and post-fasting meals as restrictions ease and this donation will enable community groups to provide food and support for so many families that may be struggling with food security.”

Ramadan & Charity
Ramadan is the 9th month of the Hijri Islamic calendar. It commemorates the first revelation of the Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad.
From dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations).
Charity in Ramadan is a spiritual staple of the Islamic holy month.
Lindsay Boswell, FareShare chief executive, said: “Demand for our service has never been higher and unfortunately we anticipate it will remain high for some time – but thanks to the support of Asda, we’re proud to be working hard to get good food to Muslim communities and faith groups throughout the Ramadan and all year round.”
Mohsin and Zuber Issa, founders of the EG Group, restored Asda giant supermarket chain to British ownership after the £6.8 billion takeover deal last October.
Earlier this year in March, they submitted plans for a £5million new mosque in their home town to serve the community and extend bridges between faith groups.
In addition to the mosque plans, the Issa Brothers have also set-up the ISSA Foundation which funds projects promoting health, education, and tackling poverty in UK and abroad. It also which bought an MRI scanner for Blackburn Royal Hospital.
