Adam Was Muslim: Why Following Generations Are Not?

02 June, 2020
Q I am a reverted Muslim sometimes ago for marriage. I still have many questions about Islam, for example 1) Who created the steps in salat? 2) How the Quran be compiled? 3) Many of the scholar keep telling Islam is simple, does it mean as long we have faith on the religion, not doing haram things, is that enough for a Muslim to enter paradise? Do we need to perform all Sunnah? 4) Since Adam the first human in earth was a Muslim, why all his following generation not a Muslim? Apologized that I have many queries as I read many books and started confusing...

Answer

Short Answer:

  • In Islam, we believe all human beings are born upon fitrah (intrinsic, innate God-given nature that acknowledges and remembers its Creator).
  • Allah sent many messengers to remind people who digress from the fitrah; that’s why He sent His guidance and His books.
  • He sealed the message with His final Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) who taught people everything they need to know from the smallest of matters to the greatest of matters on how to connect with their Creator and live a pure good life.
  • He (SWT) sent His Direct Word, the Quran, as Guidance, Cure, and Light to those who truly seek The Truth and wish to be connected with their Creator until the Day they return to Him.

3) Many of the scholars keep telling Islam is simple, does it mean as long we have faith in the religion, not doing haram things, is that enough for a Muslim to enter paradise? Do we need to perform all Sunnah?

We have answered this question in AboutIslam, please find the response here. We’ve shared the following hadith that answers your question:

A man asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him):

Do you think that if I perform the obligatory prayers, fast in Ramadan, treat as lawful that which is halal, and treat as forbidden that which is haram, and do not increase upon that [in voluntary good deeds], then I shall enter Paradise?” He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) replied, “Yes.” (Muslim)

4) Since Adam, the first human on earth was a Muslim, why are all his following generations, not Muslims?

Actually they were. We believe all human beings are born upon fitrah (intrinsic, innate God-given nature that acknowledges and remembers its Creator).

However, some people forget, indulge in worldly life, desires, temptations, ego, ignore seeking knowledge thus become easily tempted by Satan’s misguidance, concentrate on worldly life as opposed to next life, ignore what will happen after death and follow culture malpractices, conform and follow trends rather than honestly, sincerely and persistently seek the Truth.

That’s why Allah (SWT) sent many messengers to remind people; that’s why He sent His guidance and His books. He sealed the message with His final Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) who taught people everything they need to know from the smallest of matters to the greatest of matters on how to connect with their Creator and live a pure good life.

He (SWT) sent His Direct Word, the Quran, as Guidance, Cure, and Light to those who truly seek The Truth and wish to be connected with their Creator until the Day they return to Him.

Allah (SWT) said what means:

{And We had certainly brought them a Book which We detailed by knowledge – as guidance and mercy to a people who believe.

Do they await except its result? The Day its result comes those who had ignored it before will say, “The messengers of our Lord had come with the truth, so are there [now] any intercessors to intercede for us or could we be sent back to do other than we used to do?” They will have lost themselves, and lost from them is what they used to invent.

Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.} (Quran 7: 52-54)

With regards to the fitrah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, narrated Abu Huraira:

“No child is born except on Al-Fitra (Islam) and then his parents make him Jewish, Christian or Magian, as an animal produces a perfect young animal: do you see any part of its body amputated?” Then he recited:

{The religion of pure Islamic Faith (Hanifa), (i.e. to worship none but Allah), The pure Allah’s Islamic nature with which He (Allah) has created mankind. Let There be no change in Allah’s religion (i.e. to join none in Allah’s worship). That is the straight religion; but most of men know not…} (Quran 30.30)

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]

Allah (SWT) also said in the Quran:

{And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of Adam – from their loins – their descendants and made them testify of themselves, [saying to them], “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we have testified.” [This] – lest you should say on the day of Resurrection, “Indeed, we were of this unaware.”

Or [lest] you say, “It was only that our fathers associated [others in worship] with Allah before, and we were but descendants after them. Then would You destroy us for what the falsifiers have done?”

And thus do We [explain in] detail the verses, and perhaps they will return.} (Quran: 7: 172-174)

I hope this helps. Please inform us if you have any questions. May Allah (SWT) bless your journey of knowledge and increase you in wisdom and increase you in closeness to Him.

Salam and please keep in touch.
