Again tonight, the thought of leaving Islam crossed my mind.
Perhaps this thought, this feeling, resonates with many reverts. It can happen when we begin to see Islam through the disappointing actions of people, when we experience a community that fails to support our journey, or when we start wondering if everything we have sacrificed was only leading us into disappointment.
As reverts, many of us have met Muslims from different races, cultures, and backgrounds. Some have been beautiful examples of Islam, while others have caused deep pain. We often ask ourselves why. Why would a Muslim behave this way? Why is the community sometimes so unwelcoming?
Eventually, we realize that the hearts of people are not in our hands—they are in Allah’s Hands.
Every person’s actions, whether good or bad, are ultimately a reflection of how closely they
strive to obey their Creator.
A Muslim is not perfect. Although Islam teaches us to embody excellent character and to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, living by his Sunnah has become a struggle for many. People’s shortcomings should never be mistaken for the perfection of the religion itself.
The truth is, I am writing this because I have felt it too.
Tonight, I felt like I wanted to leave. The pain caused by people can become so overwhelming
that, for a moment, it feels easier to walk away than to keep holding on.
But then, Alhamdulillāh, Allah reminds me of something greater. No human being honored me with Islam. It was Allah alone who guided me when I was lost. It was Allah alone who opened my heart to His religion. It was Allah alone who blessed me with the greatest gift I have ever received.
So if Allah is the One who brought me to Islam, then no human being has the power to take me away from it.
Allah says:
“Indeed, Allah does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within
themselves.” (Qur’an 13:11)
And He also says:“And whoever Allah guides—none can lead astray. And whoever He leaves astray—never
will you find for him a guiding helper.” (Qur’an 18:17)
I remember many people who embraced Islam with sincerity but later returned to their previous beliefs. May Allah protect us and make us among those who die as righteous Muslims, ameen.
Sadly, many of them did not leave because they found fault in Islam itself. They left because
they judged Islam through the behavior of people who happened to be born into Muslim families but did not truly represent its teachings.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, though
there is good in both.” (Sahih Muslim)
Our faith was never meant to rest upon the character of people. It was meant to rest upon Allah. People will disappoint us. Communities may fail us. Even those who carry the name “Muslim” may sometimes fall short of what Islam teaches. But Allah never fails His servants, and His religion remains perfect regardless of our imperfections.
If you are struggling today because of people, do not let their actions become your measure of Islam. Look instead to the Qur’an. Look to the authentic Sunnah. Look to the life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, whose mercy, patience, and character remain the truest representation of this beautiful religion.
“Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us. Grant us mercy from
Yourself. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” (Qur’an 3:8)
