Criticizing Muslim Regimes: What Islam Really Says

08 November, 2025
Q Why don't you call out the Muslim regimes that are supporting [the apartheid regime]?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

While the frustration is understandable, publicly bashing specific countries and regimes is like a pressure valve—it makes you feel good but accomplishes nothing tangible. It can also cause potential harm to others without much gain. Therefore, it is more beneficial to speak generically against normalization and focus on more productive actions.

In response to this question, Dr. Yasir Qadhi — the Dean of The Islamic Seminary of America and the resident scholar at the East Plano Islamic Center — states:

Firstly, generically I have. And secondly, again, it goes back to what I just said. What do you and I gain? Let’s be real here. Suppose I mention all the countries. What have we gained? It’s like a pressure valve steam; you feel good. What have you accomplished? So, this is not me, I don’t agree with this. You feel good if we punch these countries down and mention, “Oh, this Middle Eastern country, this regime, this royal family.”

And believe me, I’m just as irritated as you. What do we gain? What do we gain? On the contrary, there is going to be potential harm for a number of people and not much gain. So what’s the benefit in this regard?

Therefore, I leave it generic, and I have mentioned enough: any nation, any country that wishes to normalize right now with the apartheid regime, there will be no Barakah in that at all, and Allah will deal with them.

Without a doubt, we should have a sense of frustration and anger. What else can we do in this regard?

But in any case, you’re not going to hear me constantly bash them because it goes back to this reality of what is the benefit in us constantly speaking bad about other people when the reality is that that speaking bad is going to make us feel as if we’re doing something, but it doesn’t actually do anything. We have much more other things to do in this world.
