Can You Fast While on Anti-Depressants?

19 March, 2024
Q Salam alyikom, I wanted to ask a question today about my medication that I took. I had been suffering from depression and anxiety since 5 years. Now it becomes very severe so I sought treatment and I take so many anti-depressants now like 3 of them 2 of them in the morning. So Ramadan is on the way and my thoughts are all about if I'm going to not fast and how bad I would feel because I would be very scared of God and my problems would increase. I hope you could help me know the answer whether I can fast while on depressants or not.

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

If you are suffering from depression and you take anti-depressants during the day, then you are allowed to skip the fast and make up for it later.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

I empathize with your situation and pray to Allah to grant you relief and peace of mind. I also pray that Allah inspires you to maximize the blessings of Ramadan.

Now if you are suffering from depression and you are to take the prescribed anti-depressants during the day, then you are allowed to skip the fast and make up for it later.

If you don’t expect it to go away soon, then you ought to feed a poor person in lieu of every day of Ramadan. It is estimated to be a minimum of ten dollars per day of fast, according to Canadian standards.

Allah says:

“Allah says: The month of Ramadan is that wherein the Quran was sent down as guidance to mankind, as clear proofs of guidance, and as the Criterion. Let him among you who is present fast during that [month]. And whosoever is ill or on a journey, it is a number of other days. God desires ease for you, and He does not desire hardship for you. [It is] so that you may complete the number and magnify God for having guided you, that haply you may give thanks.” (Al-Baqarah 2:185)

If, therefore, you are unable to fast, you need not feel depressed. Allah is All-Merciful and All-Wise. He tells us that He does not wish to impose hardship on us, while also reminding us to do what we are able to do, in our own given circumstances or conditions.

In other words, the fact you are not able to fast, should not prevent you from exerting yourself to do extra virtuous deeds that you can. Making lots of dhikr, reading the Quran, and helping others by using your expertise, etc.

So never give up hope and fall into despair. Allah is Merciful

I pray to Allah to bless us with an intensely spiritually rewarding Ramadan and keep us all safe and protected from the deadly viruses and diseases.

Almighty Allah knows best.
