What Does It Mean to Live Righteously in Islam? (Questions and Explanations Part 7)

What is Living Righteously as applicable to common people?

Explanation: Having agreed to beliefs, it is now living with beliefs in action. For man with commonsense, the beliefs are translated as Methodological Code of Practice expressed as Just Response.

They are meant to keep the very beliefs active and ignited. Dealing with honesty, elements of care and love towards fellow beings, living with modesty, acting with purity of intentions, behaving sincerely, witnessing to truth, actively participating in causes, spreading virtue and curbing evils, are some of the representative attributes of people living righteously.

What is the Mission Statement of an ordinary believing man and woman?

Explanation: The believing man and woman is a devout individual with firm beliefs in the realities of the Hereafter. The beliefs are reflected through personality and behavior of virtuous living. The mission statement of such individuals is articulated as under:

“All my resources, competencies, life, death and actions are submitted to God. I am committed to adopting in totality and abiding with sincerity by the obligations of God over me. I am fully committed, wholeheartedly, with all my actions and intentions, to comply with the will of God. The will of God is supreme over any priorities I may have at any point of time, now or ever.”

We read in the Quran what means:

{Say: “Behold, my prayer, and (all) my acts of worship, and my living and my dying are for God [alone], the Sustainer of all the worlds,…} (All-An`am 6:162)

The statement may be used as a reference to check one’s allegiance to God so as to stay committed throughout one’s lifelong missionary attachment to Islam.

What is Living with arrogance condemned as Evil?

Explanation: Living with arrogance is living with an attitude as if one is free, independent, self-sufficient and not at all in need of mercy and blessings from God (they do not feel the need for divine guidance as revelation, and so they hesitate to appreciate the same all-inclusive guidance).

This attitude of gross illusion speaks of a man’s extreme sense of ignorance and so is categorized as one of the greatest of evils, reflected through thoughts and tangible behavior, actions and practices.

To what extent is the level of devotion reflected outwardly?

Explanation: The level of devotion is all-pervasive and reflected through righteous behavior. The behavior is manifested in all transactions.

They live with modesty, spend in charity, are pious in actions, benevolent to the needy, adhere to commitments, fulfill promises, are God-fearing and God-conscious, prostrate before God, are loyal and just, practice virtue and extend support to deeds of virtue, resist evils, are averse to avarice after learning wisdom, are inclined to spirituality (having predominantly greater concerns for the Hereafter than for the predilections of worldly gains of today), etc.

What is living in association with the Devil (Satan)?

Explanation: Living in association with the Devil is the polar end apart from living with the Mission Statement of a Believer as mentioned in the explanation mentioned above.

It is simply disregarding all virtues and committing and/or adopting evils partially or in totality. It is living with hypocrisy. It is a hypocritical mode of living under the influence of Taghut, in total disregard to God’s call to submission.

What is Worshipping Taghut?

Explanation: Taghut is any entity or object possessing Power (i.e. Degree of Influence).

The Power endowed in entities becomes Taghut only when its degree of influence turns out to be a hindrance in the way to God – an obstacle to the Right Path of Practicing Justice and Attaining Purity – the goal set as the prime target for all to aspire to and strive for.

It may be an inanimate matter in the form of Concepts, i.e. Nationalism (considered to be superior to justice, disregarding the dignity ought to be given to individuals resident in other political regions over another), Democratic Wills of People to be accepted presumptuously as ingrained virtue, State and Statehood as Powers to admire instead of considering them as seats full of responsibilities to deliver, Riches as elements of Power and Honour, Self-esteem as things to admire, as well as Personalities having relative superiority over others due to their Wealth, Social Status, Position, Knowledge, etc.

They are called Taghut due to their power of influencing common people so as to divert their attention away from God Almighty – God Perfect in all attributes of Virtues and Goodness.

Qur’an encourages using Power to propagate Islam. Explain.

Explanation: Qur’an urges strict adherence to Soft Skills of Effective Communication as a means and approach to Preaching (Qur’an calls Apostles Messengers of glad tidings and Warners – calling men to adopt the tenets of Virtuous Living and, at the same time, making them aware of the dangers of continuing with evil deeds and practices).

The Hard Skills of Power and Coercion are reserved to be used selectively to curb Evils – Evil turning out to be a Social Crime and Chaos, spoiling peace and affecting Masses in general.Top of Form
