World #QuranHour 1

September 11, 2016, sounds like a very long time ago. Memories of things that had happened that year are slowly fading away from our minds.

But the goosebumps and the overwhelming feeling of awe that we felt the moment the entire building went pindrop silent once the emcee announced the commencement of the quiet and collective recitation of the Holy Quran, still vividly live in the memory of those who were then at the Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (SHAS) Mosque, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

The inaugural World #QuranHour was a full-house event with approximately 4,000 participants. The House of God was packed, in fact overflowing, with people from all walks of life. They brought along their families, neighbors and friends.

It was early Sunday morning, just one day before the second Eid celebration, the Eid al-Adha on the 9th of Dhulhijjah, in conjunction with the blessed day of Arafah.

Be Part of the World #QuranHour Community! - About Islam

The International Islamic University Malaysia was the proud host of the first ever World #QuranHour. The VIPs included prominent politicians, CEOs, ambassadors and celebrities. They all came to recite and contemplate the Holy Quran together with everyone else.

When it was the time for the Solidarity Recitation, the emcee instructed all the 4,000 participants in the Mosque to start reciting the page of the Quran that had been assigned to them.

The entire space instantly went silent. Within five to ten minutes, the Quran was completed about six times collectively.

The similar occasions were also held simultaneously at 650 other locations in Malaysia and in 50 countries across the globe that very same day.

Imagine how many times on that special day the Quran as a whole has been recited in unison and pondered upon by individuals and groups across the globe.

Inspirational addresses on the meaning and importance of reciting, studying and living the Quran were also given. It was a truly humbling experience to see the people make the effort and leave their houses early in the morning and travel considerable distances to the SHAS Mosque – and other mosques and program locations.

It was the eve of Eid, so everyone was also busy making preparations for the festivities. Besides, most participants fasted, since it was the Arafah day.
