Water First focuses on providing sustainable solutions through education and training. HCI is also funding one of Water First’s STEM-based water science programs, specifically designed for schools in Indigenous communities.
“We are thrilled to partner with HCI on their fundraising campaign in British Columbia,” shared Ami Gopal, Director of Development and Communications for Water First.
“Through HCI’s support, Water First will deliver hands-on STEM programming for Indigenous students in British Columbia and Alberta – providing even more opportunities for youth to engage with the water sciences. Together, we are sparking a passion for environmental water stewardship and supporting the next generation of water leaders.”
“The Water First North America tour is an opportunity for HCI to engage with the community, share our mission, and rally support for our clean water projects around the world,” said Mahmuda Khan, Executive Director of HCI.
“Partnering with Altan Düzyatan, a passionate advocate for clean water access, and Water First, a leading organization addressing water challenges in Indigenous communities, amplifies our collective impact and strengthens our commitment to social justice.”
Special Tour
In alignment with the June 17th World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, HCI ‘s Water First tour spans across Canada, with a special stop in Vancouver this month, before extending into the United States with stops in Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles.
Through this campaign, HCI seeks to engage individuals, communities, and organizations to collectively address the urgent need for clean water access. Thousands of North American Muslims are participating to raise funds for the cause.
“As Muslims, we have a responsibility to step up and respond to the humanitarian crisis around the world, but particularly in our homes and by our own neighbors. It is ingrained in our faith to be socially responsible and to extend our hands in support to those in need,” said Mahmuda Khan.
“When we witness clean water challenges in Indigenous communities, it is not only their struggle but also our duty to alleviate their suffering and work towards sustainable solutions. By embracing this responsibility, we uphold the core principles of Islam and demonstrate our commitment to compassion, justice, and the preservation of human dignity,” Khan added.
HCI’s Water First campaign also coincides with Canada’s June 21st National Indigenous Peoples Day which serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by Indigenous communities in Canada.
The day calls for unity, understanding, and action to address the injustices that persist. Within the Canadian Muslim community, organizations like Islamic Relief Canada, the Muslim Association of Canada, and the Muslim Welfare Centre have shown different forms of solidarity with Canada’s Indigenous community.
