Ontario Muslims Raise $150,000 for Libya, Morocco

  • London’s Muslim community have raised over $150,000 for earthquake and flood relief in Morocco and Libya.
  • Islamic Relief Canada hosted the fundraiser attended by 300 people at the Double Tree by Hilton.
  • The funds will go towards critical aid such as food supplies and emergency shelters.

Following a deadly earthquake in Morocco and devastating floods in Libya, the Ontario Muslim community rushed to provide humanitarian aid, raising more than $150,000.

The amount was collected in a fundraising event hosted by Islamic Relief Canada on Friday night at the Double Tree by Hilton.

“If you put yourself in their shoes, you lost your house, you lost your family, you lost everything that you ever loved and everything that you know. You can’t imagine where to get your next meal, where to sleep,” said Yasmin Alameddine, one of the organizers, CTV News reported.

“So these simple things that they don’t know where it’s coming from, we want to be able to give them at least that,” she added.

Emergency Aid

Alameddine said funds will go towards critical aid such as food supplies, emergency shelters, and essentials like mattresses and blankets.

In addition to the London event, Islamic Relief Canada is organizing fundraising events across Canada.

Its relief teams have already delivered aid containers to Libya and Morocco.

The earthquake in Morocco has destroyed tens of thousands of houses, with the death toll nearing 3,000. 

In Libya, at least 11,300 people have died, and another 10,100 are reported missing. Ahmed Zouiten, a WHO representative in Libya, said that the flood was a “disaster of epic proportions.”
