The inaugural Al-Noor Annual Boat Race Canada raised Canadian $372,518 for humanitarian causes as paddlers, charities and community members gathered at the Welland International Flatwater Centre on Saturday, August 1.

The event marked the Canadian expansion of the UK-founded charity challenge, combining dragon boat racing with fundraising for global emergency relief, orphan care and other charitable projects, Iqra.ca reported.

A total of 8,777 donors supported 25 fundraising teams and partner projects.

Racing began at 9:00 a.m., with crews competing in a series of head-to-head heats across designated flatwater lanes. Separate divisions and boat designations were maintained for men’s and women’s teams.

Participating organizations and community crews included Human Concern International, Islamic Relief Canada, Penny Appeal Canada, MAA Dragons, Team Deen, Team Wednesday, Human Appeal and the Lighthouse Foundation.

The competition concluded with an afternoon awards ceremony recognizing the leading crews across the divisions, including the Ladies’ Division champions. Winners received trophies, medals and commemorative plaques.

Away from the water, the venue hosted vendor booths, organization tents and public gathering areas. Food was provided by local culinary partners, including Masrawy Kitchen and The Local.

Designated spaces were also available for communal prayers, allowing participants and visitors to observe Salah during the event.

Following the success of the inaugural race, organizers confirmed that the Al-Noor Boat Race will return to the Welland International Flatwater Centre in summer 2027.
