Two Muslim women of Pakistani origin have been elected to Canada’s Parliament in the 2025 federal election, marking a proud moment for both the Pakistani diaspora and Muslim communities across the country.
Iqra Khalid, a long-serving Liberal Member of Parliament, secured her fourth term with a lead of more than 5,000 votes over her rival. The final margin is expected to grow as vote counting continues, Daily Pakistan reported.

Salma Zahid, another prominent Muslim and Pakistani-origin politician, also retained her seat, securing over 21,000 votes.
Both Khalid and Zahid have been recognized for their consistent advocacy on issues related to human rights, immigration, and inclusivity. Their re-election is being seen by many as a reflection of the increasing political engagement and influence of Canadian Muslims.
Liberal Victory
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal Party won the 2025 federal election, despite a fiercely contested campaign shaped in large part by tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Congratulations to @CanadianPM @MarkJCarney on the Liberal Party win in this election,” wrote the Canadian Muslim Public Affairs Council on X. “We look forward to working together to advance justice, protect civil liberties, and uphold Canada’s commitment to international law. This election showed that Canadian Muslims are engaged and ready to contribute to a stronger, more principled Canada.”
More than ever before, Muslims made their electoral power known in Canada’s 2025 general election. A coalition of five civic engagement organizations played a major role in mobilizing Muslim voters and raising awareness around key policy issues.
Mark Carney, who became Liberal leader following former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation last month, ran on a platform centered on defending Canadian sovereignty. He capitalized on a wave of anti-Trump sentiment after the US president controversially suggested annexing Canada as “the 51st state.”
Though the Conservative Party under Pierre Poilievre was favoured early in the race, Carney’s economic credibility and firm stance on Canadian independence helped shift momentum in the final weeks.
Carney is expected to continue as prime minister without a formal swearing-in if the results confirm a Liberal victory. Any cabinet reshuffle would be at his discretion.
Final election results are expected in the coming days.
