American Muslims Condemn Attack on US Capitol

A leading American civil rights group has condemned the attack on the US Capitol, describing it as an act of “violent insurrection”, with Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar announcing she was drawing up articles of impeachment against the president.

“Today’s attack on the US Capitol represents the culmination of the far-right extremism that Donald Trump first unleashed on the campaign trail five years ago,” CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a statement Wednesday.

“Make no mistake: the armed Trump supporters who stormed the US Capitol are violent insurrectionists.

“We pray for the safety of everyone under siege on Capitol Hill, including lawmakers and their staff. We call on our government to protect those in harm’s way, and we urge Congress to demand that President Trump, who is responsible for every act of seditious violence committed today, resign or face impeachment.”

This comes after angry supporters of President Trump stormed the US Capitol on Wednesday in a chaotic protest aimed at thwarting a peaceful transfer of power, forcing lawmakers to be rushed from the building and interrupting challenges to Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory.

Four persons have been reportedly killed in the chaos.

Rep. Omar, a frequent target of President Trump, announced she was drawing up articles of impeachment against him.

“I am drawing up articles of impeachment,” she tweeted.

“Donald J. Trump should be impeached by the House of Representatives & removed from office by the United States Senate. We can’t allow him to remain in office, it’s a matter of preserving our Republic and we need to fulfill our oath.”

Hours after a pro-Trump mob broke into the U.S. Capitol to protest the results of the 2020 election, congressional tellers have certified the election of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

The announcement was made by Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar at 3:39 a.m. Thursday.

Vice President Mike Pence then repeated the totals at 3:40 a.m., first for president, then for vice president.

Biden will take Trump’s place in the White House on Jan. 20.
