Muslim Women Find Voice in Italy

ROME – Muslim women in Italy have launched a new Islamic magazine, discussing topics related to the world of Muslim women which rarely make its way to mainstream media.

“The goal we have set is to give voice to all those women (and thank God there are many) who study, follow and seek to apply true Islam as best they can, because the message of Islam is unique, as is the truth,” the founder and editor of the magazine, Umm Zuhur, tells niqab.it in an interview cited by West-info reported on Wednesday, January 13.

Al Ghurabaa Magazine, released at the end of 2015, is inspired by the principle of “less is more“, which refers to less coverage of topics that are only marginally related to the world of Muslim women.

It mainly discusses issues such as health and beauty, motherhood, home or cookery.

More focus is also put on topics such as female dress according to the Qur’an, Islamic education and the definition of Halal, including food, cosmetics and medicine.

Italy has a Muslim population of some 1.7 million, including 20,000 reverts, according to the figures released by Istat, the national statistics agency.

Islam sees hijab as an obligatory code of dress, not a religious symbol displaying one’s affiliations.

As for the face veil, the majority of Muslim scholars believe that a woman is not obliged to cover her face or hands.

Scholars, however, believe that it is up to women to decide whether to take on the veil.
