Ruth Herbert, a 52-year-old woman from South Cumbria, is preparing to embark on an extraordinary 4,000-mile walk to raise funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP), a charity working to provide lifesaving healthcare in Gaza, the West Bank, and Palestinian refugee communities in Lebanon.
Beginning her journey on Friday, May 2 from her home in Arnside, Ruth plans to walk across 11 countries over six months, eventually reaching Turkey.
Early legs of the journey will take her through Blackburn, Rochdale, and Manchester before heading south to Dover, where she’ll cross into mainland Europe.

“I have always believed in the power of perseverance,” Ruth told Lancashire Telegraph. “This journey is my way of showing solidarity with the Palestinian people.”
Ruth’s trek comes as Gaza endures one of the most devastating humanitarian crises in recent history.
More than 51,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 7, many of them women and children, as Israel’s siege on the territory continues.
MAP, the organization Ruth is supporting, aims to ensure Palestinians have access to a sustainable, locally-led healthcare system. They operate programs in Gaza, the West Bank, Al-Quds, and refugee camps in Lebanon, working closely with local partners.
Ruth’s journey, titled “Big Trek 4 Palestine,” will take her through rolling hills, mountain ranges, and coastlines—landscapes that she hopes will echo the emotional weight of the cause she’s championing.
“It will be a deeply moving and exciting adventure,” she said, encouraging people to follow and support her via Facebook and Instagram at Big Trek 4 Palestine.
Her walk isn’t just a physical challenge—it’s a bold act of compassion and resistance, sending a powerful message of solidarity from the UK to Gaza.
