Is Ghusl Required after Spotting?

02 February, 2024
Q I have faced this problem of blood spots during intercourse after my menses is over on the fourth and fifth day. After I made ghusl on the fifth day of my menses, my husband had intercourse with me and found blood on his penis when actually my period had stopped and there were no spots seen. This has happened 3 times in last some months. I am scared; will this be a sin? Because we know sex is haram during menses and we have never done. Please, guide me. I have spotting sometime even on the tenth day but it is not continuous.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

If you recognize the norm of your period of menses and can easily distinguish between the menses and the other vaginal discharges; you need not to worry about that. You just need to perform ablution (wudu) for each prayer as long as your menses has ended.

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

If the blood spotting occurred after you had performed ghusl following the complete cessation of menses, then you need not worry about it. The cessation of menses is marked by the appearance of white streaks as mentioned in the report from the mother of the faithful Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).

Otherwise, the spotting is considered as part of menses; you just need to perform ghusl again and resume prayers and conjugal relations only after the spotting stops completely.

Allah Almighty knows best.
