Are Baby Dolls Disallowed?

04 December, 2016
Q As-salamu `alaykum. I have a doubt. Please, answer me. In Islam idols in home are haram. Does this also apply to having baby dolls in home?

Answer

Wa `alaykum as-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Brother, thank you for your good question and interest to know more about Islam and its teachings.

In fact, the prohibition of tasweer mentioned in some hadiths applies to erecting statues, as some scholars say. Baby toys and dolls are exempted from this general prohibition.

Answering your question, Dr. Wael Shehab, PhD in Islamic Studies from Al-Azhar University and currently the Imam of the Downtown Toronto Masjid in Canada, states:

There is no problem in having, drawing, and making baby toys or dolls; they are excluded from the general prohibition of erecting statues.

Imam Al-Nawawi said: ‘Baby toys are excluded from the prohibition of making statues that have their shadow for the hadiths that prove the concession for toys.  All kinds of toys are permissible whether they are like human beings or animals, with solid material or not, or similar to the animals or not.  The evidence for this ruling is the hadith of `A’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: “I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my female friends also used to play with me. When Allah’s Messenger used to enter (my dwelling place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet would call them to join and play with me”.’ (Muslim)

Allah Almighty knows best.
