Question

If a person needs to urinate but he fears that he will miss the prayer in congregation if he relieves himself, should he pray whilst he is holding it in, so as to be sure of praying with the congregation? Or should he relieve himself even if that means missing the congregational prayer?

Answer

Stopping Breaking Wind so as Not to Invalidate Wudu

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

One should relieve himself and make wudu even if he misses the prayer in congregation.

The late prominent Saudi Muslim scholar, Sheikh Ibn `Uthaymeen, stated:

He should relieve himself and do wudu, even if he misses the prayer in congregation, because this is a valid excuse.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There is no prayer when food is ready or when one is trying to stop oneself doing either of the two things that break wudu (i.e., urination and defecation).

Almighty Allah knows best.
