When to Resume Fasting or Prayer after Miscarriage Discharges

03 September, 2023
Q As-salamu `alaykm. I just want to know about one thing; I had a miscarriage 23 days ago. Now the bleeding totally stopped but the brownish thing is coming a little bit, so can anyone tell me if I can do perform prayers and fast, because I’m really confused about it. Please, help me.

Answer

Wa `alaykum as-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

If this brownish discharge was seen right after the post miscarriage bleeding, then the same ruling of that bleeding applies to it. So you have to abstain from praying and fasting.

Responding to your question, Dr. Muhammad Salama, PhD in Islamic Studies in English and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Islamic Science, Al-Madinah International University, states:

If this brownish discharge was seen right after the post miscarriage bleeding, then the same ruling of that bleeding applies to it. So you have to abstain from praying and fasting.

If there was a gap of time between the post miscarriage bleeding and the discharge of that brownish thing and in that period you were completely clean, then there is disagreement among scholars whether to overlook this discharge and thus a woman may start to pray and fast or to consider it a continuation of that bleeding.

Allah Almighty knows best.
