Does Entering the Bathroom Break Wudu?

10 October, 2024
Q Assalaamu alaykum. Does entering the toilet nullify our wudu (ablution) even without doing anything? For example, if I want to take something or put something in the toilet and I have ablution, does it nullify it?

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Wudu (ablution) is not nullified by merely entering the toilet.

Answering your question, The Fatwa Center at Islamweb, states:

Entering the toilet does not render wudu invalid. The things that nullify wudu are the following:

  1. Anything that comes out of the front or back passages (the penis, vagina, and anus).
  2. Loss of consciousness due to sleep, fainting, drunkenness, or insanity.
  3. Touching the genitals directly with the palm of the hand or the fingers.
  4. A man touching a woman or vice versa with lust or to feel sexual pleasure.
  5. Apostasy from Islam.

Almighty Allah knows best.
