Married in Catholic Church before Reverting back to Islam: Is Marriage Valid?

01 June, 2021
Q Salam Alaikum dear scholar.I am a convert to Islam from the Netherlands. I was raised as a Catholic Christian by my parents, but one day I found Islam and did my shahaddah. Afterwards I was weak and led astray by Satan. I regreted all my sins and made sincere tawbah to Allah.Due to pressure and weakness, I left Islam and became Catholic again. During this time I visited church and married a Catholic Christian husband. Later on I woke up and returned to Islam. My catholic husband also became Muslim and found peace in Islam. My question is: is our marriage valid? We sleep in separate rooms and are afraid to touch each other because we are scared to sin against God. I hope to hear from you soon inshallah.

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

Your marriage is valid and you are lawful to each other.

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

If you were married in a Catholic church before your reversion to Islam, you don’t need to worry about the validity of your marriage. Christians married before entering Islam were not required to renew their marriage vows.

Therefore,  you are lawful for each other. However, I would advise you to seek repentance and ask forgiveness of Allah for your sins.

I would also urge you to offer the following supplication as often as you can:

Allaahumma yaa muqalliba al-qulub thabit qulubana ala al-haqq

(O Allah, You are the twister and turner of hearts; make our hearts steadfast on the truth.)

Almighty Allah knows best.
