How To Have Hope As Trump’s Inauguration Nears?

19 January, 2017
Q The situation around us as Trump is about to take office as president is so hopeless and so irrational. What should we do? How can I regain hope?

Answer

Salam (Peace) dear questioner,

Thank you so much for your question. Your feelings are understandable and respected.

I would like to remind you of what our Mighty Creator Allah Almighty says:

{So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.} (Quran 3:139)

This is the time to show true faith in Allah Almighty and true hope in Him and commitment to His path.

If you are looking for hope, Allah has given us plenty to reflect on. Allah is The One who made the fire cool and safe for His righteous slave Ibrahim (peace be upon him-PBUH):

{Allah said, “O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham.”} (Quran 21:69)

Allah is The One who split the sea open to save His righteous slave Moses (PBUH) and his people and drowned their enemies:

{And [recall] when We parted the sea for you and saved you and drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking on.} (Quran 2:50)

Allah is The One who saved His righteous slave Noah (PBUH) when all his people lied against his message and disbelieved in the signs of Allah:

{But they denied him, so We saved him and those who were with him in the ship. And We drowned those who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a blind people.} (Quran 7:64)

Allah is The One who saved His slaves Hud and Lut and Saleh and many others (peace be upon them all). He is The One who gave victory to Muhammad (PBUH) after his people boycotted and prosecuted him and the believers and forced them to flee their homes and their country.

Allah is The One who saves. He is The One who has the upper hand and He is The One who grants believers victory eventually when they pass the test of patience and show their true faith in Him. As Allah tells us:

{Then, We will save our messengers and those who have believed. Thus, it is an obligation upon Us that We save the believers.} (Quran 10:103)

Remember who your Creator is. Remember that when Allah revealed merely a glimpse of Himself to the mountain, it fell to pieces. This is your Creator and your Protector.

So, do not fear.

But it is a time to work on ourselves and fix ourselves and our life inside and out.

{For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allah. Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron.} (Quran 13:11)

And also remember, our Noble Prophet (PBUH) has already told us about the matters that we currently observe in the world around us. Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said, “When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour.” It was asked, “How will honesty be lost, O Allah’s Messenger (PBUH)?” He said, “When authority is given to those who do not deserve it, then wait for the Hour.” (Sahih Al Bukhari)

So, we already knew this would come about. And now is time for us to work.

What should we do? We take the advice of the Messenger (PBUH) who said:

I have left two matters with you. As long as you hold to them, you will not go the wrong way. They are the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet.

Continue to uphold to The Book of Allah. Read, learn, memorize, ponder, and hold tightly to your faith. Also, study the sunnah and implement what the Prophet (PBUH) told us would bring purity and goodness in this life and the next.

Hold on to Allah and His Messenger (PBUH). Be united with the believers and support one another. Fear no one but Allah. No one is here in this world to live forever.

We are all passing by; and this is a test. Let’s not fear or be deluded by the temporary life, and rather hold on to eternity and The Eternal.

Continue doing goodness and sticking to goodness and righteousness, educate others around you as much as you can, and seek the Help of Allah.

As Allah Almighty said:

{O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.} (Quran 2:153)

Lastly, remember:

{Say, “Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.” And upon Allah let the believers rely.”} (Quran 9:51)

I hope this helps ease your worry and brings you some hope. Please keep in touch.
