Aisha Khaja: Dr. Shabir, the question today is about soulmates. How is the concept of soulmates viewed in Islam? And can one’s soulmate change?

Dr. Shabir Ally: Well, some people take the view that everything in our lives are actually predetermined.

Even though we feel that we’re making choices, we’re actually choosing something that was predetermined for us.

So, we go through all the motions of selecting the person we want to get married to, but in the end we are gonna get married to the same person that was pre-designated for us for all eternity.

I don’t take that view.

It seems to me that the predestination should be understood as an open web of possibilities.

So, all the possibilities are there, created by God for us.

But then the one that we choose and we work towards, that’s what we acquire with His help and permission.

And that’s dependent on our choice.

So, in this case, there is no preset single soulmate for us, but from among many possibilities, we might choose one that is suitable for us.

I hope this helps answer your question. Please keep in touch.

Walaikum Asalam.
