World Celebrates Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday

WORLD CAPITALS – On Friday, all around the world, Muslims are celebrating the birth of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), which falls on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar.

Known as Mawlid, the anniversary is celebrated by mainstream Sunni and Shiite denominations of Islam. Mawlid is a national holiday in most Muslim majority countries, apart from Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

Many Muslims see the Prophet’s birthday as an important time to learn about and reflect on the life of Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him.

Around the world, celebrations of the Prophet’s birthday include stalls selling Islamic books, leaflets, clothing, prayer mats, and other gifts.
