Asalamu Alaikum,
Thank you for contacting About Islam with your question.
Dr. Shabir Ally, from Let The Quran Speak, addresses this question in the video below:
Transcript:
Safiyyah Ally: Muslims strive to be as good as possible during the month of Ramadan.
While fasting, Muslims feel closer to God and there’s a spirit of self-improvement that helps them avoid sins and banish bad habits.
The real challenge, however, is to ensure that the lessons learned and the benefits gained during Ramadan carry over for the rest of the year.
Dr. Shabir Ally will share some tips for keeping the spirit of Ramadan alive.
Dr. Shabir Ally, welcome to Let the Quran Speak.
Dr. Shabir Ally: Pleasure to be on.
Safiyyah Ally: Now Ramadan is over, we, you know, that spiritual and emotional, physical, mental high that we’ve achieved is kind of going down slowly.
What can we do to maintain the excellent habits that we’ve picked up during the month?
Don’t Put The Quran Aside
Dr. Shabir Ally: Well, several things.
One is that we need to continue reciting the Book of God.
The Quran, was revealed in the month of Ramadan.
We paid a lot of attention during the month of Ramadan to recite the Quran in our mosques, in our homes.
And then at the end of Ramadan we put the Quran aside. And then, it is going to gather dust for another 11 months until the next Ramadan rolls around.
No, that should not be the case. We need to keep the Quran fresh in our hearts and in our minds.
We need to memorize some of His passages in the original Arabic so that we can recite them in our daily prayers.
And we need to ponder over the meanings of the Quranic text so that we know what the message of God is for us.
We also need to be sure that we’re applying the Book in our daily lives.
So, if we can fix it in as part of our routine every day, maybe before going to work for example, we just read a couple of lines. Maybe that’s all you need to do.
I mean a little bit but consistently throughout the year means a lot. It all adds up.
Safiyyah Ally: Sometimes people have very good intentions. They intend to continue to do all the things that they were doing in the month of Ramadan, but then, you know, life gets in the way.
You can’t maintain that same zeal that you have in the month of Ramadan because you have to go to work. You can’t lose so much sleep. You know, you have to go back to your family and take care of your family. So, what is your advice in that respect?
When Ramadan Ends Be Realistic & Consistent
Dr. Shabir Ally: Well, it’s important to pick the things that we can do and have a realistic plan. And to do a little bit but consistently.
Safiyyah Ally: I like what you said about the Quran that, you know, in the month of Ramadan we do read the Quran, you know, very quick, frequently and quickly. And we try to finish the whole thing. Sometimes people try to finish it twice, but of course you can’t necessarily read at the same speed after Ramadan.
Dr. Shabir Ally: Yes, of course, because you have other obligations to take care of. And you have spiritual high during the month of Ramadan.
Now that is over and your attention is focused on other things and even diverted away.
Safiyyah Ally: And that’s OK?
Dr. Shabir Ally: Well, this is normal.
There are high seasons and low seasons for things.
And the high season for all of this religious activity was the month of Ramadan. So, it’s natural that we will experience the fact that we’re in a low season and some of that will of course dwindle.
But we should maintain a little bit and consistently.
So, if we used to pray a lot during the month of Ramadan, we need to continue praying. At least we have to be sure that we’re praying the five regular daily prayers. …
