Q
I work for a person who uses a credit card to purchase books to sell on Amazon and pays interest. As a part of my job, I also purchase books sometimes using a credit card. I work from home and purchase books online using the card option. I came to know that it is haram. What is the ruling on this kind of job? Please advise.
I heard that using a credit card and paying interest is haram. We use credit cards for purchasing books. Sometimes my boss buys them, but I don't know if he uses cash or a card, and sometimes he asks me to purchase them online, so we have to pay using the credit card option only. And I do it as part of my job. I did not know that they charge interest if we fail to pay the bill on time and that it is haram.
I told my boss about this, and he said that no business can be done without a credit card because no one has enough money to buy everything with cash. If it is haram to pay interest, then the only way to get rid of this is to sell the books and pay before 30 days, and that way we can earn halal income. But my concern is, it is up to Allah; if He wills, He can make sales go high or drop. It is uncertain. So, every time, I cannot ask him if he paid interest or paid the credit card bill on time. This is my issue.
1. Is this type of job halal for me where a credit card is used to buy the items? Should I quit my job? Because I don't know if he pays the bill before he is charged with interest.
2. I have savings from this salary, so do those savings also become haram for me?
3. If this sort of job is haram, can I ask him to give me another task, such as listing and pricing, and not buying, so that I don't buy books with the card? But again, if he buys with a credit card and pays me a salary for other tasks, will my job be considered halal?
4. Not all, but some corporate/IT companies nowadays take loans and pay interest. As an employee, we may not know this. So, is it permissible to work in such companies as an executive or HR?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
In this fatwa:
Working for someone who uses credit cards or pays interest does not automatically make an employee’s salary haram. The key distinction is whether the employee personally engages in a prohibited act, while the employer’s payment of interest is his own responsibility.
Responding to your question, Prof. Dr. Monzer Kahf, Professor of Islamic Finance and Economics at Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies, states:
As an employee, you receive your salary for the work you do. Buying books on credit or with cash and working in IT is not haram unless you yourself do something haram, such as cheating your employer.
If the employer pays or earns interest, it is his problem, not yours. Buying with the use of credit cards is permissible; what is haram is not paying on time, as this allows the interest condition to apply. Delaying payment is haram, and it is not you who does that.
