These Men Promise to Protect UK Mosques During Riots

Driven by fears of further violence, a group of British Muslims has formed “Protect” to defend mosques facing far-right attacks in England.

Within just 48 hours of its launch, Protect garnered over 1,500 volunteers in the North West, where the group is based.

While tensions have eased in recent days, Protect’s founders emphasize the need to stay vigilant.

“The group is there to notify each other of problems in our areas so we can tell people to be careful. But if they do come towards our places of worship, the community will come out and we protect those places,” the group’s founder told the BBC.

In recent weeks, far-right unrest has targeted mosques across at least four English cities, with one even being assaulted with bricks, bottles, and rocks.

The founder explains that communities were unprepared for the sudden outbreak of violence, which could return at any moment.

Part of Protect’s mission is to verify the numerous rumors of further unrest, ensuring they respond to real threats. When a mosque or community center requests assistance, Protect mobilizes its members.

“We’re not armed; we simply stand in front of the mosque to protect it. If anyone attempts to attack, we won’t allow it,” says the founder.

He adds, “If my family members are inside that mosque and it’s under attack, I’ll protect them, even if it means getting injured.”

Their efforts have garnered support from local communities and authorities.
