Doctors to Hold Free First Aid Sessions in Mosques around Australia

  • The first aid sessions will take place in mosques, a familiar place for the community and people from refugee backgrounds.
  • Female practitioners will take part in the program to help women who might have cultural barriers.

During emergencies, 90% of lives are saved by ordinary people. Anyone can be a hero by learning and providing first aid when the time comes and ensuring first aid training is accessible to all. 

In line with the above, Australian Muslim doctors will be holding free first aid sessions in mosques around Australia to educate people on how to save lives.

Attendees will learn how to deal with choking, how to do CPR and how to use a defibrillator at the free Lifesaver sessions to be run on Saturday by the Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA), ABC News reported.

“Most of the people who come to [the] mosque, their background is from the CALD [culturally and linguistically diverse] community … and they are hesitant to start anything … outside their comfort zone,” AIMA vice-president Omer Shareef said.

“They are not really sure whether they should intervene.”

Familiar Place

The sessions will take place in mosques as a familiar place for community and people from refugee backgrounds.

Mosques holding sessions include Omar Mosque in Auburn, Sydney, Melbourne’s Grand Mosque and Brisbane’s West End Mosque.

“When they are in the mosque, they feel safe,” he said.

 Sydney-based ophthalmologist Saadiah Goolam said female practitioners would take part in the program to help women who might have cultural barriers.

“Our aim is actually to try and reach everybody, regardless of their cultural background,” Dr. Goolam said.

“These kinds of life-changing moments strike at any place at any time.”

Saving lives is a key teaching in Islam that can be found in the Qur’an.
