Appointed by Oliva Chow, Ausma Malik is one of four deputy mayors for the city, Muslim Link reported.

“I’m incredibly honored to be appointed first Deputy Mayor of Toronto by Mayor Olivia Chow and my fellow councilors,” Malik wrote on social media.
“I love Toronto. It’s my home. And I believe that everyone should be able to imagine a future here. In a city like ours, all of us should have what we need to thrive and see ourselves reflected in our city’s leadership.
“I’m excited to collaborate with neighbors across the city and my City Council colleagues to meet our most urgent priorities and make life better for all Torontonians. Together, we can do this!”
Pakistani Canadian Ausma Malik was elected to Toronto City Council in October 2022, representing Ward 10, Spadina-Fort York.
From 2014 to 2018, she served as a Toronto District School Board Trustee for Ward 10-Trinity-Spadina, becoming the first hijab-wearing Muslim woman elected to public office in Canada.
According to Malik’s website, her parents immigrated to Canada from Pakistan over five decades ago to Toronto.
The human rights and social justice activist graduated from the University of Toronto and has a background in policy, communications and community organizing.
