Can You Become a Lawyer in a Non-Muslim Country? (Video)

22 May, 2022
Q Is it permissible for a Muslim to become a lawyer in a non-Muslim country?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

  1. This question arises because of and in conjunction to the verse in Surat al-Maidah that states “And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the disbelievers.” (Al-Maidah 5:44)
  2. To make sense of this and to clear the confusion, we need to understand that lawyers do not come up with legislation. You are safe and allowed to practice as long as you are not defending the criminals or those guilty.
