Highlighting common humanity among people of all races

6th Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival Concludes

Featuring eight films that encourage reflection and meaningful discussion surrounding Muslims and their experiences, the sixth annual Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival concluded Sunday at the Oriental Theatre.

Running from October 21-24, this year’s festival has successfully highlighted the common humanity among people of all races, ethnicities and beliefs.

“What’s probably unique about this festival is that every single film that is shown has some type of talkback feature,” Founder of the Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival, and President of the MMWC, Janan Najeeb, told WISN 12 News.

“Whether it’s the director or producer showing up, or whether we have a panel or someone that was within the film shows up. It’s an opportunity for discussion within the community.”

Sharing Muslim Experience

The Milwaukee Muslim Film Festival is being organized by the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition (MMWC), an organization dedicated to helping the local community gain a more accurate understanding of Islam in the Greater Milwaukee area.

The coalition founded the annual festival in 2015 to create meaningful and relevant community dialogue surrounding Islam and the Muslim experience.

This year’s festival features eight films from across the globe that highlight the common humanity among people.

The films included City of Ali, Hamtramck, Captains of Zaatari, The Present, The Mauritanian, 200 Meters, The Dissident, and The Return: Life After ISIS.

The annual festival, deemed one of America’s leading international Muslim film festivals, has paved a way for award-winning motion pictures to be discovered by a local audience, while offering creative filmmakers the attention they deserve.

The festival is dedicated to discovering and sharing some of the most exhilarating and thought-provoking films from around the world.

The objective is to use movies as a way to converse on topics and issues that are relevant to matters occurring in the world today, generating important discussions regarding Muslims and the Muslim world.
