In this fatwa:
- Prophet Muhammad ordered Muslims to read out loud the Fatihah and the surah while offering Fajr, Maghrib, Isha, and to recite them silently in Zhuhr and Asr. This rule applies to both men and women.
- Some scholars view that a woman may read out loud only if she is praying alone or in the presence of her close relations and not in the presence of strangers.
In responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered us, “Pray as you have seen me praying.” (Al-Bukhari)
The precedent he set for the Five Daily Prayers is to read the Fatihah and the Quran aloud while offering Fajr, Maghrib, Isha prayers, and to recite them silently in Zhuhr and Asr prayers.
He also showed us to recite aloud in the night prayers including Taraweeh, Qiyam al-Layl, Tahajjud, and Witr.
There is no mention anywhere in the sources that the above rule applies only to men. The rule to follow is the revealed text did not indicate otherwise, the same rule applies to both genders.
Therefore, a woman should pray out loud. However, some of the scholars are of the view that a woman may do so only if she is praying alone or in the presence of her close relations (in blood or marriage) and not in the presence of strangers.
However, she should judge for herself since there is no text forbidding it.
