As salaam elaikum! My wife left the house and she is living in her parent's house for more than 80 days now. With an impulse and an intent of "sending" an email to her of divorce, I started typing it in an email client. It was addressed to my wife's email ID, along with CC to my family. It stated that I was to "divorce" her (only one), and I assure you that it seemed legit. In the subject I typed: To whom it may concern. So my act is there without any doubt.... Now as far as I can judge my initial and overall intention in all of this was to actually "send" her the divorce via that email. Honestly, because this had been the reason for me typing it directly in an "email client" in the first place. This clause was not stated in the email itself but only intended in my mind and was understood by me in a generic sense. Besides, I was under an impression that without "sending" her the email, the divorce may not take an effect on its own (my own ignorance). I came very close to sending her the email but I didn't send it and later decided to delete it. Kindly note that it was only after the above has happened that I came to know that if a sharai intent is met with the written/typed divorce. It can automatically fall in effect. In such a case, sending the email would have been unnecessary. Because my "intention" at that time was to explicitly SEND her a divorce via email and NOT to divorce her by mere TYPING it, so in such a scenario will a divorce be counted as such, because in the end I didn't send them that email. In other words after establishing my intention of divorce along with it's mode, later my mode of divorce got changed in the same sitting/impulse without a new Intent for it. Please note that my impulse was still running and it may not have been so short lived. As I still wanted to send the email but I didn't in the end and that's when my impulse slowly diminished aswell. JazakaAllahu khairun.

As long as you had a serious intention to divorce your wife and expressed this intention in a written form, the divorce becomes as effective as if you had expressed it in an oral form. The wife thus becomes divorced from the time you typed it and you have to let her know of this development to observe her waiting period.

Of course, if the divorce is revocable, you can take her back during the waiting period.

Written divorce is ineffective only if there is no serious intention behind it.

Assalmu alakium, thank you for providing a service where I can ask questions. My period lasts about 4 days, with the 4th day being very light, only a little spotting in the morning and nothing at night. I started to fast again on the 5th day and in the early day there was a tiny bit of blood on the tissue when I used the restroom. Does this break my fast? Can I choose to continue to fast today because of the fact that I know I won't be bleeding anymore today? Because of the drop of blood does this make me dirty for the whole day?

If this blood has the same traits of menstrual blood, then you have to break fasting and make up that day after Ramadan. If it has yellowish or brownish color, then you should disregard it and continue fasting.

As long as such ejaculation took place while you were asleep, you fasting remains valid, since this is something beyond one’s control.

I need badly for zakat this time. But for society issues I can't say that I need help. so I just want to hide my identity. Say everything right without mentioning that I need that help. Is it correct to receive that money saying just one lie to my friends that my another friend needs zakat but actually I really need that ..

In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad.

Lying is basically prohibited and not allowed in your case. But you can avoid lying and use general words that are open to various interpretation. For example, you can simply say to people that you collect zakah for “someone you know” who needs it.

Could you please give some references to books which are based on History of Prophet Muhammad along with reference to the revelation of Quran during the history.Basically, is there a book which not just describes the chronology of revelation but also give great detail about the context and the situations of prophets life during a particular revelation.

Your question presupposes that there are reasons and occasions for all Quranic verses, which is not true. There are verses that were sent down for reasons or in certain occasions while others were sent down in the first place without a specific reason initiating a legislation, providing clarification, or giving lessons and admonition.

Therefore, authentic books of sirah (Prophet’s biography) are sufficient in this regard.

Assalamu alaikum,Is it halal or haram to sell franchises of restaurants or grocery stores in USA. we know that these stores or restaurants like kfc or 7-11 may sell pork products along with halal products or lottery tickets etc. to the public(non muslims)... my job is to sell the brands and permit franchisees to open restaurants or stores in certain areas of their interest. Is my income halal or haram if i receive salary and onuses and royalties from the sale of the restaurant rights. Thanks

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

If the percentage of haram products these stores and restaurants sell in relation to other halal products is high, you have to quit selling their franchise. Still even with low percentage, your income will be including a percentage of haram, which you have to get rid of.

Therefore, you should avoid selling franchises for such stores and restaurants altogether and find alternative stores with pure halal products to sell their franchise.

Can a menstruating woman observe laylat al-qadr?

In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon Prophet Muhammad.

A menstruating woman is forbidden to perform Prayer or to observe fasting. According to the majority of scholars, she may not observe i`tikaf in the mosque. But still there are other acts of worship she can do whereby she can observe Laylat al-Qadr.

She may read the Quran without touching the mushaf (either from her memory or by wearing a glove or the like while holding it).

She can make supplications, do charity, ask for forgiveness and engage in other sorts of dhikr.

What should we do during laylat al-qadr?

In the last ten nights of Ramadan, a Muslim should be a diligent worshipper hoping for the reward of  Laylat al-Qadr.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever stands [in Prayer] on Laylat al-Qadr believing [in its value and promised reward] and hoping [for that reward] will have all his preceding sins forgiven.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

He used to observe i`tikaf (ritual retreat) in the mosque for the sake of devotional worship. Hence, it is recommendable to observe i`tikaf in these days as it helps one be dedicated for worship and keeps him away from mundane distractions.

Moreover, one should keep earnest supplication to Allah the Almighty to forgive and pardon him/her.

`Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “O Messenger of Allah, if I come to realize Laylat al-Qadr, what should I say [in supplication]? He said, “Say, Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun, tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni (O Allah, You are ever-pardoning; You love pardoning; so pardon me.)”” (Al-Tirmidhi)

Laylat al-Qadr occurs in the last ten nights of Ramadan; particularly in the odd numbered ones. There is a great difference of opinion among scholars concerning the exact night it occurs in.

Hiding the exact date of that night refers to the unfathomable divine wisdom. `Ubadah ibn al-Samit reported “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to inform us about the Night of Qadr but two Muslims were quarreling with each other. So, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “I came out to inform you about the Night of Qadr but such-and-such persons were quarreling, so the news about it had been taken away (i.e. I forgot it); yet that might be for your own good …”
Therefore, it is recommendable to increase worship in all the last ten nights of Ramadan; particularly in the odd numbered ones.

What is laylat al-Qadr?

In the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving

In the Quran Allah the Almighty says what means, Indeed, [it is] We [who] have sent this [Quran] down on Laylat al-Qadr. And do you realize what is Laylat al-Qadr? Laylat al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. Therein do the angels and the Spirit [Gabriel] descend, by the permission of their Lord, with every [divine] commandment. Peace it is till the rise of dawn! (Al-Qadr 97:1-5)

The word laylat means night, whereas the word al-Qadr could mean the greatness and magnificence. It also could also mean predetermining and preordaining.

Therefore, Laylat al-Qadr could mean “the night of magnificence and great value” because it is a greatly blessed night in which sincere worship is doubled to be better than the worship of a thousand months, and because it is the night in which the Quran was sent down.

It could also mean “the night of predetermining decree” because in this night Allah the Almighty predetermines all the occurrences and events of the coming year as mentioned in the Quranic verses that readIndeed, it is We who have sent it [i.e. the Quran] down in a blessed night. For, indeed, it is We who are giving [humanity] forewarning. In that [blessed night] every wise affair is determined by a [divine] command from Our providence.” Ad-Dukhan 44:3-5)

For its great value and magnificence, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Whoever stands [in Prayer] on Laylat al-Qadr believing [in its value and promised reward] and hoping [for that reward] will have all his preceding sins forgiven.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
