Yemen on Verge of World’s Worst Famine in 100 Years

War-ravaged Yemen is facing the risk of becoming the “worst famine in the world in 100 years”, the United Nations has warned.

“We predict that we could be looking at 12 to 13 million innocent civilians who are at risk of dying from the lack of food,” Lise Grande, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Yemen, said in a statement on Wednesday, 17 October.

According to the UN, more than 5 million Yemenis are at immediate risk of starvation, while an additional 8 million are at risk in the short to medium term.

Yemen has fallen into civil war in 2014 when Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including capital Sanaa.

“The world needs to act on Yemen,” Caoimhe de Barra, chief executive of aid agency Trócaire, said in the statement.

“All warring parties should call a ceasefire and allow unimpeded access of humanitarian aid,” she added.

In an effort to help famine-ravaged Yemenis, the aid agency has provided €300,000 to provide 1,500 families with safe drinking water and improved hygiene.

“This famine is a shocking example of an entirely human-made crisis,” de Barra said.
