Why Heaven and Hell?

29 August, 2016
Q I am confused about Islam. There is no doubt that I am not a good Muslim but I still acknowledge I am a Muslim and proud of it. My questions are: 1. Why did God made us? 2. Why did God create this huge limitless cosmos? 3. Why are there hidden secrets? 4. Each and every particle represents the existence of God but why did He make these all? 5. Why did God put us in such type of confusion? 6. Why heaven and hell? 7. If we are super creature of this universe then why didn't Allah ask us before sending us on Earth? 8. Why we don't have free choice? I don't want to go to heaven or hell so why did God make me? This is all against my will. Please clear these confusions for me.

Answer

Salam Dear Questioner,

Thank your for your questions and for contacting Ask About Islam.

Initially, I don’t have answers to your questions because they are addressed to God and He is the only One that may answer you.

However, I can only warn you that God does what He wishes and He is not to be questioned about what He does but we are the ones who will be questioned about what we do. Allah says what means:

{He is accountable to none for what He does, but all others are accountable (to Him).} (Al-Anbiya, 21:23)

Therefore, we have to understand who we are and what our limits are, because such questions are indirectly implying dissatisfaction with God’s plan and that we could have planned it better.

This is also indirectly implying that we should have been Gods, may God forbid and forgive. What you ought to do is obey God so He may be pleased with you.

Put your trust in Him and He will not turn you down.  Do your best within your limitations because you already exist and you do not have a choice not to exist because you are God’s creation; He willed that you exist.

Do not dwell over what you don’t have control over. However, you may ask God to change the things that you are unhappy with. He may choose to remove them or keep them to test you.

Now I will attempt to answer your questions but please forgive me if I fail.

1. Why did God made us? Read the answer at this link.

2. Why did God create this huge limitless cosmos? Only Allah knows.

3. Why are there hidden secrets? Because Allah is All-Knowing and we have limited knowledge. He left it up to us to discover the universe.

4. Each and every particle represents the existence of God but why did He make all these? Everything Allah has created is for a purpose. It is only our shortcoming that we do not realize the wisdom behind His creations.

5. Why did God put us in such type of confusion? Actually, God made things very clear for us. The confusion comes from misunderstanding Allah’s message. The Quran is our guideline and Prophet Muhammad’s tradition (sunnah) is the practical implementation of God’s command. All we have to do is to seek knowledge and apply the Prophet’s sunnah.

6. Why heaven and hell? If the oppressors in this world who were behind the suffering if millions of people are left without judgement then the oppressed did not get justice. Allah being the most just created heaven and hell to enforce justice.

As beings with free will, we may choose to do good deeds or evil deeds. When we do evil and repent to Allah then Allah will forgive us but when the human being is arrogant and persistent on evil then such a person deserves punishment.

7. If we are super creature of this universe then why didn’t Allah ask us before sending us on Earth? Again Allah does what He wishes. Even a super creature cannot go against God’s will.

8. Why we don’t have free choice? We do have free choice. You might be asking why we don’t have free choice before we were born. It is only when we reach puberty that we are accountable for our actions since now we are responsible for the choices we make.

Before that and even before birth, we are not held accountable therefore because we didn’t have free choice or our choices as children are immature. Our birth and existence on earth is again Allah’s choice.

Allah is testing us through this short span of time on Earth. If we pass, we live in bliss inshaAllah. It is not that hard to pass Allah’s test. It just requires a little bit of strong will.

I hope this helps.

Salam and please keep in touch.
