Are The Shayateen Locked Up in Ramadan?

21 April, 2020
Q Are The Shayateen really locked up in Ramadan? If so, then why do bad things still happen?

Answer

Short Answer:

  • Dr. Shabir Ally says: Well, some take it literally and then they try to explain why do we see satanic activity still present in the month of Ramadan. Some say, well only the bigger ones are chained with the lesser ones are still out doing their evils.
  • And some say well, you know, even though the Shaytan, the Satans are chained, but human beings still have their own satanic inner tendency. And that too is the cause of some evil even during the month of Ramadan.
  • But I think the answer is that this should be taken metaphorically. It’s not that the satans are literally chained up. But when the person is fasting, we, do to our own determination, render satan powerless. He cannot attack us the way he normally does in in other months by giving us devilish whisperings. It’s to no avail. It’s as though we have actually rendered him chained up.

Are The Shayateen Locked Up in Ramadan?

Transcript:

Aisha Khaja: So, Dr. Shabir, the question today is about in the month of Ramadan. We often, Muslims are often told that the shayateen are actually locked up. Is this true?

Dr. Shabir Ally: Well, some take it literally and then they try to explain why do we see satanic activity still present in the month of Ramadan. Some say, well only the bigger ones are chained with the lesser ones are still out doing their evils.

And yes. And some say well, you know, even though the Shaytan, the Satans are chained, but human beings still have their own satanic inner tendency, what is called nafsaneyah. And that too is the cause of some evil even during the month of Ramadan.

But I think the answer is that this should be taken metaphorically. It’s not that the satans are literally chained up. But when the person is fasting, we, do to our own determination, render satan powerless. He cannot attack us the way he normally does in in other months by giving us devilish whisperings.

It’s to no avail. It’s as though we have actually rendered him chained up.

Aisha Khaja: That’s a wonderful answer. Thank you very much, Dr. Shabir.

I hope this helps answer your question.
