America’s `Eid Marred by Hate Attacks

NEW YORK – As Muslims worldwide celebrated `Eid Al-Adha, US Muslims’ holiday has been marred with attacks after a mosque in the US state of Florida was set ablaze by an arsonist while another New York Muslim woman’s clothing was set on fire.

“We are clearly seeing a spike in attacks on individual Muslims and Islamic institutions in New York and around the country, which should be of concern to all Americans,” Afaf Nasher, executive director of the New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), said in a statement sent to AboutIslam.net.

“It is time for the mayor and the NYPD to put forward the necessary resources to investigate and prevent these attacks on the Muslim community.”

The 36-year-old Muslim woman, who wears Islamic attire, had her blouse set on fire outside a store in Manhattan Saturday night.

The victim put out the flames on the sleeve of her blouse and was not hurt in the attack.

The suspect, who reportedly did not say anything during the attack, remains at large.

The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force is trying to determine a motive for the attack.

Meanwhile, CAIR-NY also urged New York’s mayor to add resources for the investigation of hate crimes.

Muslims make up 1% of America’s 322 million population, according to Pew Research center.

Anti-Muslim sentiments have reached an all-time high after the rise of the so-called Islamic State, formerly known as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

Moreover, the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has added to increasing anti-Muslim sentiments.

Trump’s views on immigration have sparked controversy nationwide, especially his proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the US.

Mosque Arson

Apart from New York attack, a mosque in the US state of Florida has been set ablaze by an arsonist during the Muslim `Eid Al-Adha holiday.

Fire crews arrived at the scene in the early hours of Monday after receiving reports of flames coming out of the Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, located about 160km southeast of the city of Orlando.

“We are not sure exactly whether this is a hate crime or just an arson, we do know that a crime has occurred and that it is arson,” Major David Thompson, of the St Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, told reporters at a news conference, Aljazeera reported.

Investigators were also considering a connection with the 15th anniversary of the September 11 attacks on Sunday, Thompson added.

Surveillance video showed a white or Hispanic man riding up on a Harley Davidson-style motorcycle.

The suspect got off the bike and approached the mosque carrying a bottle of liquid and papers, moments before the blaze erupted, he said.

`Eid Al-Adha, a major Muslim holiday, was being celebrated on Monday and also could have prompted the attack, Thompson said.

“For this to happen to us, on the morning of our biggest celebration of the year, was something horrific,” Hamaad Rahman, associate imam at the mosque, said at a news conference.

“Our community is bigger than a building, we are stronger than that,” he added.

“Hopefully as time goes by, we will be able to rebuild.”

Ahmed Bedier, president of the civic group United Voices for America, also called for authorities to investigate it as a hate crime.

“For this to happen to us, on the morning of our biggest celebration of the year, was something horrific,” Hamaad Rahman, associate imam at the mosque, also told reporters.
