Shawwal fasting

Q:

What are the virtues of Shawwal fasting?

A:

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Thank you for your question.

Fasting 6 days during the month of Shawwal is highly recommended by the Sunnah. A Muslim who is capable to fast should try his/her best to fast these optional fast-days of Shawwal.

Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, โ€œWhosoever fasts the holy month of Ramadan and then follows it with fasting six days of Shawwal, it would be regarded (for him/her) as if he/she has fasted the entire year.โ€ (Muslim).

It is noteworthy that it is not a condition to fast these days consecutively. So, a person may fast on Mondays and Thursdays, for instance, until he/she fasts the 6 days of Shawwal.

May Allah accept your and our good deeds!

Allah Almighty knows best.
