Meditation

Wa `alaykum as-salam wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-giving

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon His Prophet Muhammad.

Meditation is a broad term that takes in various techniques and practices based on its religious and/or traditional root.It is practiced for different reasons, particularly, for self-relief or as a part of ritual practices in some religions.

Islam urges its followers to practice sorts of meditation that are compatible with its tenets of belief and serve the integrity of Muslim personality.

A Muslim is required to practice introspection of his/her inner self to bring it in line with the injunctions and commands of Allah.

Meditation is also useful for other purposes, such as generating consciousness of death, enhancing concentration during worship.

A Muslims is also required to recite the Quran with mediation and contemplation because it is a real remedy for the soul, as we read in the Quran O humankind! There has come to you [in this Quran] an [inspired] admonition [of imminent Judgment] from your Lord- and a healing for all that is in the [human] breast, as well as guidance [for your salvation], and a mercy for the [well-being of the] believers.” Yunus 10:57)

The main objective in all this is to strengthen one’s relation with Allah and discipline one’s inner self, while inner peace, comfort, and tranquility come as a corollary.

On the other hand, meditation that is related to any religious practices usually comprises of acts, positions and/or chants that mostly contravene Islamic beliefs and teachings.

Therefore, a Muslim has to be cautious enough not to fall in the traps of such imported practices.

A Muslim has to abide by the Islamic method of meditation and to believe that it is enough for his/her well-being.

Almighty Allah knows best.
