Breaking a promise

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Mercy-Giving

All praise is due to Allah. Peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad.

Drinking alcohol is one of the major sins. Almighty Allah says what means “O you who believe! Indeed intoxicants, and gambling, and idol altars, and divining arrows are but defilement from the works of Satan. So shun them, so that you may be successful. Indeed Satan only desires to instill between you enmity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling, and to turn you away from the remembrance of Allah and from Prayer. Will you not, then, desist?” (Al-Ma’idah 5:90-91)

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed ten involved in the [industry and consumption of] intoxicants: The one who presses it, the one who has it pressed, its drinker, its carrier, and the one it is carried to, its server, its seller, the one who consumes its price, the one who purchases it and the one it was purchased for.” (At-Tirmidhi)

Contemporary scholars have also declared the prohibition of smoking after it has proved to be seriously detrimental to health causing such fatal disease as cancer of lungs, mouth, pharynx, throat, esophagus, kidney, stomach, colon, and rectum.

Brother, you need to repent sincerely to Allah and quit both smoking and drinking alcohol. Quitting bad habits requires strong resolve. Pray to Allah to help you in this regard and be honest in your prayers. Avoid bad company and evil gatherings that may drive you to commit these sins. Develop a strong sense of piety and God-fearing to protect you from falling back into such sinful quagmire. Fill your leisure time with the remembrance of Allah and useful activities.

Finally, you have to make atonement for breaking your oath as mentioned in Surat Al-Ma’idah verse 89; that is, to feed ten indigent people with the average of what you feed your own family or clothe them. If you cannot afford this, then you may fast three days instead.

Almighty Allah knows best.
