National anthem

Q:

Assalamualaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, I had a doubt that is singing national anthems haram? Even if it’s without musical instruments? The Pakistani national anthems consists “shelter of God,the glorious the mighty” I read on ur site that if it doesn’t consist God then it is not prohibited, but the Pakistani one does. Please check the meaning of the whole pakistani anthem and help me. Jazakallah khair in sha allah

A:

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu waRahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

This is one of the one of the English renditions of the Pakistani national anthem that I found:

Blessed be the sacred land,

Happy be the bounteous realm.

Thou symbol of high resolve,

O Land of Pakistan!

Blessed be the citadel of faith.

The order of this sacred land,

The might of the brotherhood of the people,

May the nation, the country, and the state,

Shine in glory everlasting!

Blessed be the goal of our ambition.

The flag of the crescent and star,

Leads the way to progress and perfection,

Interpreter of our past, glory of our present,

inspiration for our future!

Shade of God, the Glorious and Mighty.

I do not find anything objectionable; one may raise some objections to some of the words (for instance, sacred land, shade of God, etc.) used in translation; I am sure it is due to inaccurate rendering of the Urdu words.

So there is nothing wrong in chanting it; I am sure it has been approved by the mainstream Ulama in Pakistan. So, why make an issue out of it.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) has advised us against rigidity in the practice of religion.

Almighty Allah knows best.
