Assalamualikum. Sir, I have a question please be kind enough to answer my question it's really important. I have started reading the Quran but I have a fear that I'll make a mistake in pronouncing some words. So my question is, is it allowed to listen to a reciter while I read the Quran at the same time? Jazakallah Khair for your precious time. Regards.

Wa Alaykum Assalam and thank you for your question.

There is absolutely nothing wrong from reciting Quran while listening to a reciter. However, I recommend that you listen to the reciter, read after him then try to read on your own.

It will also be of great help if you have a translation to understand and ponder upon the meaning.

It was narrated from Aisha that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“The one who is proficient with the Quran will be with the noble and righteous scribes (the angels), and the one who reads it and stumbles over it, finding it difficult, will have a double reward.” (Ibn Majah – Sahih)

A.O.A I just want you to pray for my sister who is preparing for MCAT (a test for MBBS). My parents and all other family members are worried. If possible then please suggest some (wird) for it. The test will be held in few months. Especially pray for her. Jazakallah

Wa Alaykum Assalam and thank you for your question.

Initially, the best supplication (dua) is the one that comes from the heart with sincerity. Supplicate in your own language to reach a higher level of sincerity.

A dua does not have to be long but it has to be sincere and one of the ways to increase that is by waking up for tahajjud prayer in the last third of the night, let us say, about an hour before fajr. Pray two rakats and elongate your sujood while supplicating for your sister. Ask your family members to do the same.

May Allah grant her success in this world and in the Hereafter.

I will also make dua for her inshaAllah.

I made private Shahada in January and have been attending the new Muslim class and recently learning to read Quran in Arabic at the local mosque. I celebrated Ramadan, and have adopted an Islamic lifestyle. Do I have to make a public Shahada? I live in a very anti Muslim community and my family would completely disown me. I have recently had 2 terrible experiences. My Imam keeps asking when I'll make public Shahada but I'm not ready. Truth is I'm terrified and I don't want to lose my family over this. I'm not sure I'm ready to deal with public opinion either. I'm not converting for a spouse and I have no support system. I would appreciate your opinion.

Wa Alaykum Assalam and thank you for your question.

Maybe you have a misunderstanding about what public Shahada means. Let me explain.

You have observed Ramadan, attended Islamic courses, and went to the mosque regularly, which are all things that you have done in public, at least in front of the Muslims.

Taking the Shahada in public is not any different, you will have to stand in front of all the Muslims in the mosque and declare the testimony of faith. It does not have to be on Fridays when the mosque is full; it could be any other time, even if witnessed by few Muslims.

If you are not ready, it is not a problem. Take your time, you are already a Muslim. The public declaration is to solidify that stand.

The brothers and sisters in your community would like to celebrate your coming to Islam so they are anxious to hear you do so in front of all of them.

Simply explain your situation to the local Imam and tell him if you could do so in a more settled way.

Good luck and welcome to Islam!
