Building Traits for Loving Relationships: Gentleness

Ramadan certainly has transformative power.

Before starting this month, we can ask ourselves: What is the good I can do, and how can I benefit from Ramadan? How can I carry on these gains and use them to build loving relationships?

Sr. Hana Alasry reflects upon three characteristics that we practice during this months and are worth maintaining and implementing in your life: gentleness, gratitude and better family dynamics.

Gentleness

The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said:

“Kindness is not to be found in anything but that it adds to its beauty.” Sahih Muslim 2594a

Kindness, gentle speech and behavior are characteristics of a true believer. Kindness beautifies us not only in front of others, but also in the eyes of Allah (SWT). What does this mean in practice?

During Ramadan, you were required to hold back your anger and harsh emotional reactions. This might be easy when you are fine, but what about moments of stress and bad mood?

Frequently, your family members and loved ones are the victims of your quick impulses, while they would deserve the kindest behavior from you. How to transform your reaction into gentleness?

Recognize the “Activation”

The shift inside towards feelings of stress and frustration in a particular situation is called activation. Activation indeed is the enemy of gentleness, as it leads you to quick and harsh reactions that you might regret later.

Learn to recognize this moment, “hit the break” and change it into a gentle response, so you can build peace in you and around you.
