Would Roadside Drain Water on Clothing Affect Prayer?

09 November, 2019
Q As-salamu alaykum. In our country, roadside drain water usually comes from kitchens and bathrooms. Because of dirt, garbage, etc., the color of drain water turns black, and also has a bad odor. Is this water considered impure? I mean, if some drops of this drain water get on one's clothes, will their prayer be valid with those clothes?

Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

If you are sure that this drain water has changed because of an impurity, you must wash the spots on your body or clothes that are stained with this drain water when you want to pray.

Answering your question, The Fatwa Center at Islamweb, states:

In principle, this drain water or any other water that touches you is pure. You do not rule that it is impure unless you are certain that it has been changed by an impurity.

If it is possible that its color has changed because of other pure things that were mixed with it or because of an impurity, then in principle it is pure.

Therefore, it is permissible for you to pray in clothes stained with this drain water. If you are absolutely certain that this water has changed because of an impurity, then in that case, you must wash the spots on your body or clothes that are stained with this water when you want to pray.

Almighty Allah knows best.
