Can You Respond to Greeting during Prayer?

15 January, 2024
Q As-salamu `alaykum. Is it OK to return Salam if a person was greeted while he was offering Prayer? How should one behave in such case?

Answer

Wa `alaykum as-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

During prayer, a Muslim is in a state of submission and devotion to Allah Almighty. So, he is not allowed to engage himself in anything even in greeting (salam).

In responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

During Prayer, we are not allowed to greet anyone or return the greeting of anyone. Prayer is a communion with Allah, Lord of the worlds.

While we are engaged in communing with Allah, we are not allowed to be distracted from it by engaging in conversations with others.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Prayer is all about remembrance of Allah; therefore one should not be conversing or speaking with others while performing Prayer.” (Muslim)

Allah Almighty knows best.
