Forgot to Do Ghusl and Prayed: Are Payers Valid?

24 November, 2023
Q I was wondering, if you found out that you were in a state of janabah (major impurity) for a long time without knowing because you did things that were wrong in ghusl. You didn't make ghusl, or you thought you were pure but then later you found out that you were not, are the prayers offered during that course of time valid? Jazakallah Khair.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

  • If you are sure you made ghusl and later you doubted whether you made mistakes, you need not pay any attention to such whispering doubts.
  • If you know you prayed without ghusl, you need to repeat those prayers if you can keep track of the number. Otherwise, you should make an educated guess and make them up.

Responding to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and an Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

If you are sure you made ghusl and later you doubted whether you made mistakes, you need not pay any attention to such whispering doubts.

However, you owe it to yourself to make sure that you don’t repeat the same mistakes. Allah tells us to pray: {Our Lord, do not take us to task if forget or make a mistake.} (Al-Baqarah 2:286)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Allah has excused my community of their mistakes due to forgetfulness or ignorance.” (Ibn Majah)

Therefore, you need not worry about such mistakes and pray to Allah as follows:

Allaahumma ighfir lee dhanbee kullahu diqqahu wa jillahu, awwalahu wa aakhirahu,  sirrahu wa alaaniyyathahu, khata’ahu wa amadahu, wa maa alimthu minhu wa maa lam a’lam

“O Allah, forgive me all of the sins, major and minor, the first and the last, the secret and the open, the one I did b unintentionally and those done intentionally, and those that I am aware of and those that I am not aware of.”

If you know you prayed without ghusl, you need to repeat those prayers if you can keep track of the number. Otherwise, you should make an educated guess and make them up.

Finally, as a conscientious Muslim, you ought to learn from the past mistakes and resolve never to repeat them and continue to make Istighfar (begging the mercy and forgiveness of Allah).

Almighty Allah knows best.
