How Can I Know If I Have Chosen the Right Mosque to Attend?

17 July, 2021
Q I live in the place where there are many mosques. And there is a mosque which is very near my hostel in which very less people attend the prayer.I go to the mosque which is far away from my hostel and I find very much peace in that mosque and the environment is also very nice as more people attend the prayer. Now the imam of the small mosque told me to pray at the small mosque only. But I could not get interest in going to that mosque. Please tell me what I should do.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

In this fatwa:

There is nothing wrong in going to the mosque where you experience peace and tranquility, and you get to know more people.

Khushu` or presence of mind is the essence of prayer. As long as you pray in the congregation, you are allowed to go where you are more likely to gain better khushu’. Allah says,

{Successful indeed are the believers, who have khushu` in their prayer (or those who pray reverently with peace of mind.} (Al-Mu’minun 23:1-2)

Having said this, I ought to point out, if it is a question of praying individually or in congregation then you should opt for the latter even if you can do it only in the mosque with a lesser number of congregants.

I pray to Allah to inspire us to pray reverently with true peace of mind.

Almighty Allah knows best.
